Daily Bread - Deuteronomy 12:1-32

Daily Bread

Title: How to Worship God
Deuteronomy 12:1-32
Key Verse 7

There, in the presence of the LORD your God, you and your families shall eat and shall rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the LORD your God has blessed you.

The Israelites were only supposed to worship in the ways God told them - a nation set apart so that they might proclaim their God to all the world. God is good and He doesn't want His worshipers to kill the innocent, harm themselves, or do detestable things in the name of worship. Worship, instead, is to be a time to eat, rejoice, and remember all that God has done in their lives. You know, as I read this, I thought, "This sounds a lot like what Jesus told the Samaritan woman about worship in John 4:23."

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

The God of Israel and the Father of Jesus Christ is the same. He seeks worshipers who praise Him from their hearts. This is, afterall, the Great Commandment. God didn't give His people an 'order of service' with a prescribed number of hymns and a sermon that will only last 30 minutes. In Deuteronomy and in John, God tells us that worshipers please Him when they rejoice in the goodness of God and love Him. He doesn't take pleasure when people mindlessly follow some outline or ritual or chant repeated phrases. He wants worship that comes from the heart. He wants to have a real relationship with us. He wants us to know Him and be blessed.

When we worship God by rejoicing in Him, we are true worshipers. First, we must come to know God. And once we know Him, once we ourselves begin to get familiar with His character and being, we can understand what the joy of Salvation means. Out of this heart, one will delight in hymns and songs of praise. When we have a heart of understanding toward God, we will long to hear His word and not grow weary of hearing it. Let us worship God in spirit and in truth as He desires us to do!

Let us come to know the LORD God of Israel and enjoy His presence! For this, our love, is a pleasing offering to God.

One Word: True Worship is from the heart
