Daily Bread - Deuteronomy 14:1-29

Daily Bread

Title: A test of the Great Commandment
Deuteronomy 14:1-29
Key Verse 2

This passage speaks of the laws of God's chosen people, the Israelites. In my post from yesterday, though, I said that true worship is from the heart and not according to rules. So what does one make of all these rules?

Also in yesterday's post, I mentioned how a form of love is serving. God's people should be willing to do as He says, obeying, because they delight in Him and His ways. In all these rules, I think God was testing the Israelite's hearts to see if they loved themselves or God more. If they had to chose - do I act to please myself or do I act to please God - what would they do? In various Psalms, we learn that God tests the heart. These rules seem also to be a test of the heart. In fact, the whole Law is a test. It is one that we all fall short of. Though we fail to be perfect on our own, God's work in us purifies us and "turns this something normal, into something beautiful."

May God's children always seek to do His will and act in accordance with His heart! Even when we fail, if we remember the amazing Grace of our Heavenly Father, we can trust and persevere.

One Word: Test of the Heart
