Daily Bread - Deuteronomy 18:1-22

Daily Bread

Title: A chosen people
Deuteronomy 18:1-22
Key verses 5, 18

In the days of the kingdom of Egypt, there stands a man in glorious garments of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet weave ministering before a Tabernacle in the desert.

By the river sits a man eating honey and locusts, preparing the way of the Lord as Roman legions cross the roads.

In the temple gates cries out a man, a poet, calling to God's people during the Babylonian age. He is calling - turn your hearts back to God!

What do they all have in common? God chose them to be His priests and His prophets. Note that important word - 'chose'. Godly men do not make themselves that way -- they are called. Often, they shirk away from the appointment. Moses asked that God find another. Jeremiah said that he was just a boy. But God did not rely only on their own strength. No, he girded them up with His mighty power and enabled them to do incredible things and endure incredible suffering.

Christians are also chosen by God, a holy nation. We should respond to the call and rely on God. It is not for us to depend on our own abilities or strengths alone. Think of Moses. He has a speaking problem and was asked to go 'speak' to Pharaoh. Yet God did not push him off and leave him to fight the battle on his own. No, we are promised that when we seek God, He is found. "I am always with you." Therefore, we shouldn't worry, and we shouldn't slip out of our duty. We should take up our cross with confidence in knowing that the God who can do all things is with us to enable us. Thank God for His great compassion! Let us come to Him in prayer and ask for His strength every day - even three times a day like Daniel. If we ask, in faith, we will receive, the Bible says.

One Word: You who are chosen by God, rely on Him!
