Faith of our fathers

2 Chronicles 13-20
c. 10th - 9th century BC

After the death of King Solomon, the kingdom of Israel split into the Northern and Southern Kingdoms. Solomon's son Rehoboam reigned over Judah (the Southern Kingdom) for 17 years. After this, Rehoboam's son Abijah reigned in Judah 3 years. During these years, there was war between the Northern and Southern kingdoms. On one occasion, King Abijah of Judah went out to battle with Israel (the northern kingdom) with an army only half the size of Israel's army. Yet, King Abijah declared to his opponents: "O children of Israel, do not fight against the LORD God of your fathers, for you shall not prosper!"

שען

they (trusted in / relied upon / relied on) the LORD

After King Abijah died, his son Asa reigned in his place. During the reign of King Asa, an army from Ethiopia came up against them. When Judah's army went out to meet them at Mareshah and prepared for battle, King Asa said:

שען

"we (trust in / rely on / rest on) You"

After King Asa died, his son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place. During the reign of King Jehoshaphat, an army from Moab, Ammon, and other places came up against him. The king was afraid when he heard about this great multitude, so he "set himself to seek the LORD." The people assembled in the temple in Jerusalem and there, King Jehoshaphat prayed to God. God answered him through a prophet named Jahaziel and told them not to fear, but to go down against them the next day, position themselves and "stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!" They did this, and "as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said":

אמן
"(put your trust in / have faith in / believe in) the LORD your God"

Brief word study:
שען is a word that refers to "leaning on" something or someone. Also, "place his/her confidence in" "rely on."
אמן is a word that refers to "trusting in" something or someone. Also, "to be stayed up" "to be carried" "to be stable" "to believe."

New Testament references:
Hebrews 11 faith chapter Romans 1:17 ...by faith from first to last... Romans 3:21 ...to all and on all who believe...

(Hymn) We Rest on Thee and in Thy Name we go.

Notes on the kings (update)

Worked some on an old post about the Kings of Judah. When I started the list, my goal was to chart out the ages of the crown princes at the times of various events which took place during their fathers' reigns. It grew into something more of an all-the-data-I-can-find type of reference list. Someday I need to revise the format to make it easier to digest the data.

Tomorrow I will have to pick up the work where I left off at King Jehoshaphat...
