The overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim

As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah And their neighbors,” says the Lord, “So no one shall reside there, Nor son of man dwell in it. Jeremiah 50:40

I discovered today that Sodom and Gomorrah are mentioned quite often throughout the Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation! What does God's word tell us about Sodom and Gomorrah and its neighbors?

Genesis 10:19 (border of the Canaanites)
Genesis 13:10-13 (Lot journeyed east)
Genesis 14 (war)
Genesis 18-19 (Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed)
Deuteronomy 29:23 (they have become like S&G)
Deuteronomy 32:32 (their 'blessing' is a curse)

Isaiah 1:9-10 (We would have become like S&G)
Isaiah 3:9 (They declare their sin as Sodom)
Isaiah 13:19 (Babylon will be as when God overthrew S&G)
Jeremiah 23:14 (Jerusalem's inhabitants are like S&G)
Jeremiah 49:18 (Edom also...as in the overthrow of S&G)
Jeremiah 50:40 (Babylon...as God overthrew S&G)
Ezekiel 16:46-56 (you became more corrupt than your sister Sodom)
Amos 4:11 (I overthrew some of you...as S&G)
Zephaniah 2:9 (Moab and Ammon will be like S&G)

Lamentations 4:6 (punishment greater than that of Sodom)

Matthew 10:15 (it will be more tolerable for the land of S&G)
Matthew 11:23-24 (if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom)
Mark 6:11 (it will be more tolerable for S&G in the day of judgment)
Luke 10:12 (it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom)
Luke 17:29 (so it will be also)
2 Peter 2:6 (making them an example)
Jude 1:7 (are set forth as an example)
Revelation 11:8 (spiritually is called Sodom...where also our Lord was crucified)

What did Sodom and Gomorrah do to offend God? Collapse )
pomegranates and bells

At one time, I searched hard to find a way to put my interest in Bible history to use. I considered becoming a missionary, looked at going on for my doctorate, studied ancient languages, was tempted to become a pastor, tried to initiate a new Bible study using a timeline to map out major prophecies about the Christ, attended lectures about Biblical theology and Bible study, prayed, complained to my sisters in small group, felt stifled, and cried a lot. I was desperate to put my interest to good use!

Now, I'm feeling content to be used by the Lord in a quieter way. I'd be happy to encourage my fellow brothers and sisters in the truth day-by-day as we walk together on this path home. I'd be happy to share the astonishing news of Jesus with those around me if they will listen. I'd be happy to spin and dance in the light of God's word as I wait for Him to come - even if that's done from the quietest corners of the camp and not in the doorway of the temple proper. When Mary broke the costly jar of fragrant oil and anointed Jesus, some were indignant and rebuked her for the waste. She was not a famous priest or rabbi, but she loved the Lord and honored Him in a beautiful, quiet, and (very!) fragrant way. I want to be that kind of woman - a woman of the word - showing everyone that this Jesus is the Lord and that He is worthy to be praised.

"Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. ...he greatly helped those who had believed..." Acts 18:24-28

"[let your beauty be] a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God." 1 Peter 3:4

"Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, but who can find a faithful man?" Proverbs 20:6
