What is mine?
While I feel that I own certain things as my own, how can I make this claim? Isn't it clear that what I think is mine may become lost, worn out, stolen, or blown away? Not to mention that I come into the world with nothing and leave with nothing. Every thing I have is a blessing. I cannot create food or health out of thin air! Because at the most basic level I am a totally reliant being (needing a constant supply of food, protection, and love), I must conclude that I own nothing.
Aha, but I can own one thing as my own. This is something that no one can take away.
I own a Promise.
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39
What is this love?
"For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:40
What do you mean by "faith"?
"What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? ...
But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.
You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
...[D]o you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did." James 2:14,18-22
The end of this faith is what?
"And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."
He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son." Revelation 21:3-7
This and this alone is the only thing man can claim in all life and in all creation. But is this not greater than all that we think we own?
