Long periods of study...sailing music!

This week, I spent one and a half days coding GUIs in Java. I decided I needed some good coding music, so I took a tip from an expert and pulled out the Great Big Sea CD! Some sailing shanties always make the work go faster! It was actually way too much fun and I kept singing along rather loudly. :p

Today I had class from 2-5 - but it was actually quite enjoyable. We got to deconstruct the Dewey system on the subject of education and identify the present "elemental concepts". Then, we grouped those elemental concepts by facet to make cataloging quicker and more efficient. After this, we got to play with old data base cards. In the "not-so-old" days, they had cards with holes along the edge. Also, had these long knitting-like needles that could fit through the holes of a huge stack of cards. If a given hole represented a relevant descriptor term, they would notch that spot on the card. This meant that when you stuck the needle through the stack and then lifted the stack of cards and shook them, all the relevant cards would fall out. Our professor demonstrated and it was pretty fun^^ Then we used peek-a-boo cards to illustrate how Boolean searching works. The peek-a-boo cards are like player piano roles with holes punched at given spots, each spot representing a record. Each card stands for a descriptor/subject term. When you AND two ideas together and line up their cards, the spots where you can see through both tell you what articles meet the AND condition. We then discussed hierarchical inheritance and inclusive searching.

When I returned, I just didn't have the heart to move on and do Database work. So I looked around the net for a picture of the garland that some people refer to in reference to the Parable of the Lost Coin. Finding nothing, I sat wishing I had time to spend the night reading Isaiah. I had the chorus based on Isaiah 55 running through my head earlier and I was in a rather pleasant mood. Instead, I laid down on my bed for about 5 minutes to regain my willpower to get started on database homework. It's a good thing that I didn't delay any longer than I did, because I just finished and it is after midnight. While I really enjoy Information Organization class, I do not particularly love database class. I think the reason is because our project swelled into this huge monster! :p It's going to have more tables than I can count!!

Now I should go to bed...but I just started the day!! :\

I had a dream I was moving forward/Floating gently to the sun
I can see the earth below me/and I can/feel it turn
A new day has begun

-nous irons jouer sur le bord de l'eau!
