The way they do this is a four step process: 1) Pray, 2) Read, 3) Think and write, 4) Pray. I've done these at the conferences, but not so much here. I thought I would take a half an hour this morning to do it and see if I can continue through the rest of this week. Then, I will tackle another week. Anyway, here goes:
Title: Walking and Talking with Jesus
Key Verse: 24:32
And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
As they walked to Emmaus, these two disciples were debating all the events of the Holy Week and what it meant. They were confused and couldn't seem to unravel these mysteries by themselves. Likewise, I sometimes get confused when I read the Bible and when I try to figure out what meaning it has for me. I wonder what certain passages are supposed to teach and why they are included. I doubt things that I can't understand. I need Jesus to come and teach me.
Amazingly, Jesus promised that he would send his Holy Spirit upon those who believed so they might understand all of these things. His promise is found in John 14:26 - "But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."
I easily forget what I read in the Bible. It is a very long book! I can't remember all the verses and I don't know where many of the connections are. I forget a lot that I hear because at that time, it may not have been a concern of mine. Moreover, because the Scriptures are the inspired word of God and I am a simple person, I cannot begin to comprehend all the vast meaning contained in it. I need someone to teach me. I need to ask that the Holy Spirit come and teach me very clearly. If I ask with faith, I am assured that it will be so. Also, I need to observe others who are also seeking the Kingdom of God to see what they have learned. They can show me many things that they have come to understand. This is why it is so exciting to listen to messages and attend Bible studies. I get to see how they have walked with Jesus on the road to Emmaus and join them on the way.
The two disciples said that their heart burned within them as Jesus taught them on the way. I pray that my heart may burn with longing - to learn for myself by the grace of the Holy Spirit and to learn from others who seek God with a humble heart. Together as the Church, and even where two or three are gathered, we can encourage one another on the walk. Let our hearts love God and love to learn about His word.
One Word: Learning and walking together
