Daily Bread - Deuteronomy 15:1-23

Daily Bread

Title: Generosity - why is it important?
Deuteronomy 15:1-23
Key Verse 15

This passage tells the people of Israel to be generous to those around them. Why? Verse 15 explains that it is so they might remember that they were slaves in Egypt, but that it was God who redeemed them. They should remember who they are and who they were and the salvation of God so they will not become too proud or haughty to give and help others.

The Israelite people were told not to hoard up all the good things God has given them. Truly, these are gifts from above and not of their own power. Thus, with God's heart, they were asked to love and help those less fortunate around them. They were commanded to give freely with a generous heart. If they don't, they are merely coveting that which God has given them and become like the evil Vinedressers in Luke 20:9.

Likewise, Christians should remember who we are. We are sinners and mortals whose very life is not of our own design. All we have here in this life and all that is being stored up in the life to come are amazing gifts. We should therefore be joyful! We should therefore have the heart of God - a heart that was so generous that He gave His one and only Son. We should never boast of having anything, except Christ. We should freely give because we have freely received.

One Word: The reason to give is love
