Daily Bread - Luke 16:19-31, home again

Daily Bread

Title: If they would listen to Scripture...
Luke 16:19-31
Key verse 29

"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'"

This parable is rather interesting on a number of levels. The part I find most interesting is the end. In verses 27-28, the rich man (who is in hell) calls out to Abraham (who is in heaven) and asks him to send Lazarus to warn his brothers of hell. Abraham tells the rich man that they already have ample warnings given to them in the Scriptures. The rich man says, yes, but if they saw someone raised from the dead, then they would definitely pay attention to the Bible! Abraham responds: "'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"

It is easy for us as people to wish for some clear sign to tell us that God is real. We feel like we need some proof or some evidence. What we fail to realize is that the evidence is right here in Scripture. In order to understand, we need to actually read it, study it, think about it, wrestle with it.

Does any jury make a judgment without examining the evidence?
Then why are we so quick to judge the Bible before we have examined all the evidence?

One Word: Hear out Moses and the Prophets

Since getting home, it has been hectic, but good. We got back Saturday night, stopping at two sets of grandparents' houses. Then we all fell asleep. Sunday, we had a nice church service. We learned a lot about Jeremiah! The lesson taught that while we seek fulfillment in other people, no person is God. The only one who can fulfill us is God Himself. Let's get to know Him and boast in Him alone!
After church, we watched Jaws :3 Such a fun movie!! Then we spent the evening at gram and pap's. We got to sit outside for a while and pet the cats. Also, we saw two deer venture into the field. The trees were swaying gently above the field of winter wheat. The backdrop was a gently moving screen of sky. Early on, I saw a cloud shaped like a boat with a large figurehead. Her hair was flowing and the sails were lowered. Later, I saw a cloud that looked like a furry sheep next to a pyramid.
Today we will be attending a viewing and a funeral. There is another one tomorrow. Also, there was one last week. It has been hard for the people here. I pray that God's peace may be upon them. Also, many people from the church have showered those families with gifts of food and flowers - such a blessing^^. While this small town is draining, it is also reviving.
