Key Verse 9
Be happy, young man, while you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you to judgment.
Ecclesiastes shows us a healthy balance of solemness and happiness. Life is given as a gift and we are to enjoy it. Yet, we are not to take this gift and hoard it, living a life without God. If we do so, we only turn down living water and live for leaky pursuits. The book concludes by saying that the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep His Commandments. We are not to fear death or other people or our own weaknesses. We are to stand in reverent awe of God with ears willing to listen and feet ready to walk. We are to keep His Commandments - to love the God who created us and others He has created. We are to live upright and just lives in the light of God's grace.
On our own, we cannot make ourselves righteous. On our own, we cannot fill ourselves. All under the sun is meaningless. But we are not to live lives of defeat that look only at what we cannot do. We have been given victory - all we need to do is accept Jesus and his victory.
