Daily Bread - Colossians 3:11-17

Title: Live like Christ
Colossians 3:11-17
(Also John 13:1-17)

Verse 12 - "Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."

God's chosen people.
These are not elected to be set off on their own, trying their best. No, they are dearly loved. God watches over them and cares for them. God promises to forgive their sins when they fail and seek His grace. He promises to be always with them, no matter what. He gives them the Holy Spirit to be a counselor, very powerful to transform their lives. They do not need to worry about trying to prove their calling. No, they only need to seek God, their King, and grow through studying His word, prayer, and meditation.

The Holy God has made them holy through the cross and continues to sanctify them. Today in Bible study we learned that Jesus seeks to wash our feet, to wash away our sins. We have been made clean, but we need to remain clean. If we do not let Jesus continually wash our sins, we will have no part in him, as he told Peter in verse 8. Daily we must live in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah. Then, we will know that we remain safely his.

Praise God that he would do all this for even me :D

As chosen people, we are told to dress ourselves in:
-compassion (Mark 1:41, Mark 6:34, Luke 15:20)
-kindness (Luke 6:35)
-humility (Luke 1:52, John 13:3-5)
-gentleness (Matthew 11:29, Matthew 21:5)
-patience (Luke 8:15)

These are all attributes that come about by a loving heart. When we are filled with love, the rest follow.

Verse 16 - "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God."

When we work, we should not do it in ignorance. When we seek God, we should not do it without listening to Him. We can hear God through His word and His word has the power to change us. We should embrace the Scriptures daily as our bread, craving them, and gaining strength from them. Then, when we sing or teach, we will do it wisely, because we are grounded and rooted in the truth.

Verse 17 - "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

We live because Christ lives in us.
Let's praise him and glorify the Father!
