However, we see from Scripture that both the body and the soul have been tainted by sin and death. Neither is pure while we live in this world. Therefore, it is right that we seek sanctification for both the body and the soul. We need to care for the body by treating it with respect and seeking a healthy daily lifestyle. We need to clean our souls through studying the Word of God and applying its lessons so our hearts might be filled with good things.
At the return of our Lord, we who believe will finally be completely sanctified. Our earthly bodies will be resurrected into our heavenly bodies (I Corinthians 15) and our souls will be made perfect in Christ our Lord. This is not simply an escape from the body or the victory of the soul as Western philosophy hopes for. This is the glorious completion of our creation, when we finally reflect the pure image of God (Genesis 1:27). Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
