Various radio news

I've been listening to 25 wpm code lately during my breaks at work. I get hung up when I run into words like "this" (dah di-di-di-dit di-di di-di-dit), but in general, the patterns are really sinking in. MorseRunner is going well, but I recently activated QRM and it is very irritating. Hey, you're too close to my frequency! I have also tackled some more call sign practice online and have gotten up to some nice speeds. I almost hit 30 wpm during one session - whew! I get frustrated when they send me call signs that have two numbers in a row because I get confused, but I should get used to a variety of call signs. I find that I am much more comfortable with the code in general after all this practice, but I still need to write things down. I can copy more in my head, but not everything. And QSB (signals fading in and out) still really throws me off, but I think that will just take time to adapt to.

I am also forming a strategy for my apartment QRP operation. I'm going to plan to get on the air during the daylight hours when the skip is shorter and the radio waves don't travel quite so far. Maybe this will prove more successful than my attempted night-time calls. I am also making arrangements to try meeting some folks on the air over the next few days. We'll see how it goes! The Kentucky QSO Party is this weekend, too, I think. After I get back from battery shopping on Saturday, I will have to try and work some KY stations.

I'm going to a battery store on Saturday to pick up a 7aH battery for the rig. That ought to provide me enough power for some fun QRP outings with the FT-817ND next year! I'm looking forward to that. Anyone want to come with me out to the hills to work some cw/ssb? Guess I will next have to look for portable paddles!

Finally, I am eagerly awaiting news on the next contest. It's hard to say whether plans will work out, but I hope they do. I feel like I am going through withdraw already. This is a bad sign!
