Then God said, "Let there be light"...
Then God said, "Let there be a firmament...
Then God said, "Let ...the dry land appear"...
Then God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament...
Then God said, "Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth...
Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind...
Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image... [emphasis is mine]
In prayer this evening, I was reflecting on God's awesome work of creation. I was about to pray something to the effect of, "the awesome work of Your hands," when a thought struck me. Does Genesis ever mention God's hands in reference to the creation of the heavens or the earth?
In Genesis 1, we see God speaking the universe into being, making the firmament and dividing the waters, making the sun, moon, and stars and setting them into place, making the sea creatures, birds, land animals, and humans. In Genesis 2:7, 21-22 and, we again see the creation of man and woman, but this time, in more detail: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being...And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman..."
All creation was made to glorify God and people are God's special handiwork. Made in His image. And for those who come to Him humbly, He works to shape them into Christ-like children of God. Isaiah 64:8 says, "But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand."
I pray that God will give me a heart as merciful as His - to pray, to love, and to serve my fellow men and women and to view myself humbly as one of these people. I am from dust, of dust, to dust - but living now and forever for the glory of God! He made and saved me (praise Jesus!) and He will redeem me FOR HIS NAME's SAKE (Isaiah 48:9-11). Praise His holy name! :) He shows His awesome Sovereignty in such a gentle, loving way - hanging on the cross with my sin and shame on his shoulders so I might be close to Him in glory.
"May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face shine upon us,
that your ways may be known on earth,
your salvation among all nations.
May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you."
