Scripture exegesis (what does the Bible say) - hermeneutics (what does the Bible say to me?)
It's at the point of transition from exegesis to hermeneutics that I get caught.

primary sources - secondary sources
I tend to be hesitant to refer to secondary sources, except as a framework.

Is this why I enjoy reference manuals more than commentaries? Is this why I enjoy reading Scripture but find it hard to counsel others?

How can we discern true teaching from false teaching? I suppose we must be like the Bereans who "received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so." (Acts 17:11) We must also "ask of God [for wisdom]" (James 1:5) and pray for our Bible teachers and elders (1 Timothy 5:17).
