The High Priest and the New Covenant

As I was reading up through Hebrews chapter 10 yesterday, the book seemed to be divided into two parts - the first dealing with the High Priest and the second dealing with the new covenant. A connection between the priest and the covenant seemed to be found here - "For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law." Hebrews 7:12

The first part began with a beautiful description of the Lord Jesus, then went on to discuss His appointment as High Priest (quoting Psalm 110), and ended with these words in chapter 8 - "Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man."

The transition seemed to be in verse 6 - "But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises." Chapters 8-10 continue to discuss the prophecy about the new covenant found in Jeremiah.

That was my initial interpretation, but I'd need to go through more carefully to make sure that this is a correct understanding. It's amazing to read these passages that talk about the Lord's position as High Priest and what that means. What are the blessings of the new covenant? How are these different from the old covenant? Where is Jesus now? How awesome it is that our High Priest lives forever, has saved us completely, and has perfected us who are being sanctified... Wow! How is it that God could remember my sin no more? How is it that Jesus is not ashamed to call us brethren? What does it mean that He has made us priests (Revelation 1:6)? How awesome is the grace of God -- not only does He bind us up and save us, but he gives us strong encouragement by securing our salvation with an oath to end all doubt.

"The Lord lives!
Blessed be my Rock!
Let the God of my salvation be exalted!"
Psalm 18:46

Ok, time to get back to metrics work...
