This weekend, my roommates and I took a trip to the beach. It was my first ocean beach vacation. When we arrived at the water, everyone set up beach chairs and settled in with their favorite books or took a nap in the sunshine. Meanwhile, I ran off to the water to explore.
I was intrigued by the different types of sand I encountered as I neared the ocean. The sand over the dunes was light and warm – it was hard to walk through. It became more solid in the area where everyone was encamped under beach umbrellas. Going still further, the sand became cool and packed until finally I reached the place where the water ran over the sand and left it beautifully even and clear. I stood there for a long time in the flat, open space letting the water lap up over my feet and drag the sand out from under my heels. The water was cool and refreshing and it tickled when it came up around my ankles. My favorite part was standing still to watch the sheets of clear water run over the flat sand and then draw back out to sea. The sun cast glowing ridges on the top of the water and it shone down through on the sand as it washed in and pulled out. The ebbing patterns of light were mesmerizing.
I was so excited that I jumped in the waves as they rolled on shore and even ran in circles. I also went on a walk to collect a few little stones, sat and dug my hands into the sand, and followed a little sand bird with a long beak. I'm sure the folks on the beach thought I was crazy, but I really didn't care how I looked. I just wanted to enjoy my time. It was delightful. I could only stay out in the sun for an hour or two, before retreating to the shade of the nearby beach house. I sat on the porch and listened to the sound of the ocean. The moon rose rosy that evening and the sun rose behind a pale light wall of clouds that later broke and scattered.
My roommates and I also had many good times of conversation and company. We ate crabs together, ate ice cream cake together, ate a homecooked meal together, walked together on the beach, talked in the car about the Old Testament, 1 Peter, etc, talked about life paths, dreams, past experiences, potential opportunities, and ways we can better care for each other.
It was a blessing to visit the beach. I enjoyed this first beach vacation :D
