Today's sermon was on 1 Timothy 6:20-21 "O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge - by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen."
Earlier in the book, Paul gives advice concerning the women in the church. He says that they should adorn themselves "with good works" (2:8-10) and gives some examples: "if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work" (5:10). In the case of young widows, he advises that they "marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully" (5:14). Wow, I wonder how godly women can do all of those things at once? I feel like I can hardly keep up with just the "manage the house" part!
After church, I had some lasagna, made an Earl Grey tea latte, called my nurse (my Mom), took some medicine, and took a nap. After I got up, I did some study in 1 John 3 for our small group Bible study tomorrow, checked the news about the possible government shutdown this week, and then started browsing through old journal entries from past Septembers and listened to various music. Whew, I'm pretty worn out, but feeling better.
